LET'S SOLVE WATER
Soaring human demand for water has created a crisis. Despite covering almost 70 percent of the earth, we rely on the 2.5 percent of water which is fresh, and 99 percent of that is not easily accessible, the majority being trapped in glaciers and snowfields.
Africa is home to around 1.33 billion people, or 16.7 percent of the global population. Most estimates agree that at current growth rates (around 2.5 percent a year), the continent will have to support double the number of inhabitants by as early as 2050. The need for innovation in order to preserve and sustainably manage freshwater resources has never been more pressing, and organizations such as Xylem are at the forefront of these efforts. Technology is driven by society’s attitude and resolve to solve a crisis.
“Our motto – let’s solve water – is our purpose. It is our mission to unite society and react to a crisis. Our technologies are born out of this resolve, to serve this purpose. Critical to the sustainable management of water is attitude, and technology is a product of attitude.” It covers an enormous base of use cases and industries such as agriculture, commercial buildings, construction, power generation, food and beverage, pharmaceuticals, mining, oil and gas, residential, municipal and transportation, to name but a few. From individual laymen and NGOs to large corporates and utilities, Xylem engages a huge variety of clients across the globe, its Africa division employing approximately 250 dedicated personnel.

Flygt N-Pump Series
Flygt N-pumps take on the toughest applications and get the job done. Every component is designed and manufactured to deliver sustained high efficiency. Thanks to the patented N-technology with its innovative selfcleaning impeller, Flygt N-pumps deliver the highest total efficiency — lowering your energy bill and reducing unplanned maintenance costs. That adds up to total peace of mind – and big savings over the long term.
Robust and reliable Every Flygt N-pump is tested in the factory to ensure high performance and premium quality. Flygt products deliver outstanding, cost-effective performance that has been proven in applications such as: • Wastewater • Storm water • Sludge • Industrial effluent • Raw water • Cooling water.
Flygt Submersible Propeller Pumps
Flygt propeller pumps are designed to transport large volumes of water at low heads. The slim profile of these pumps provides a considerably smaller pump station footprint than that of non-submersible pumps. These smart economic alternatives operate submerged in the pumped liquid. That makes them less complex to install and enables the motors to run cooler and more quietly than non-submersible propeller pumps. Flygt propeller pumps deliver solid cost-effective performance that has been proven for more than 40 years in applications such as: • Storm water • WWTP Effluent • Water intakes • Flood control • Amusement park attractions • Surf riders.
Technology leadership – Flygt propeller pumps feature patented Flygt N-technology, which is renowned for its self-cleaning capabilities and sustained high efficiency.
Self-cleaning components – To prevent clogging, Flygt propeller blades feature signature N-technology with the backswept
design of the leading edge. This sweeps debris away from the propeller along the relief groove located in the wear ring. Guide vanes help force debris out of the pump housing by the strong turbulent flow created within.
Flygt Pressure Sewer Systems
Flygt Pressure Sewage Systems provide reliable, effective and cost-optimized connections for single homes or an entire development to a municipal wastewater collection network. PSS systems are especially suitable in remote locations, low-lying areas, for waterfronts, across waterways, in rocky soil conditions, in undulating terrain or flat country. The advantages of PSS are clear: Effective wastewater transportation at minimum excavation depth, minimizing the toll on the environment and inconvenience to neighbors. This smart, economic alternative to gravity feed sewage systems costs less to install and maintain.
The Flygt PSS controllers are compact and robust controllers that you can modify and accessorize according to your pump station’s specific needs. Features such as display, communication, outdoor cabinet or other accessories can be added as needed. For constant monitoring of your pumping station from a distance, the Flygt controllers keeps you informed at all times. Alarms are displayed locally in the alarm log and are instantly delivered via SMS or to a SCADA system.
Flygt Compact and Submersible Mixers
Engineered for flexibility, versatility and lean installation, these space saving mixers offer highly efficient solutions for any tank shape and size. Our compact mixers easily blend highly contaminated fluids high-density or high-viscosity liquids, and liquids with fibrous materials. Few components, low capital investment and straightforward service routines make Flygt compact mixers the economical choice for a broad range of mixing applications, like Activated sludge treatment selector basins, sludge mixing and aeration basins.
The Flygt plug-in seal features the Active Seal system for zero leakage into the stator housing. Laser-cut grooves on the inner seal faces act as a micro-pump to force any liquid present on the drive-unit back to the buffer fluid side. The seal housing with the barrier fluid helps lubricate and cool the seal, ensuring efficient heat transfer even when running dry. It is possible to increase mixer efficiency by up to 15% in water, and even higher in viscous liquids, with the optional jet ring, while further reducing energy consumption.

Municipal Water & Wastewater Treatment
Wastewater treatment. In some ways, nothing could be more basic. Harnessing the power that nature uses to cleanse the rivers and streams – air, microbes, gravity, light – the wastewater industry has revolutionized sanitation and brought health to their communities, rivers, streams, lakes and oceans.
However, today’s demands are far from basic. Everyone must do more with less. To keep rates affordable, plant operators manage with less funding, less staff, less space, less energy consumption. You must do more – more treatment as the list of parameters on discharge permits grow and grow. BOD, COD, TSS, fecal coliforms – yes. But also nitrogen, phosphorus, metals, other pathogens and predictably soon, pharmaceutical residuals.
Older systems need to replace and upgrade original equipment. At the same time, utilities are challenged to treat smarter, squeeze more treatment out of the same footprint, reduce energy use and add advanced processes. Newer plants must predict the future, plan for expandability, and stricter limits.
When the water leaves the plant, it is no longer wastewater, but a highly valuable resource. It is ready for reuse, sometimes directly, or by downstream users, industries, potable water plants, or the ecosystem that depends upon your water for its very life.
Municipal Wastewater Pumping and Treatment
Whether big or small, all water and wastewater treatment plants and collection systems face the same issues: The combination of aging infrastructure and a dynamic regulatory environment are constantly challenging the cost of treating water. And it’s not going to get any easier. As a result, these demands combine to place a heavy strain on your water and wastewater systems and your people.
Fortunately, Xylem is an experienced partner to help you navigate these challenges.
In some cases, rental equipment is the right solution and Xylem is there with rental options. Downtime is not an option in these critical operations, and we understand that.
